Michael Nelson alumnus profile

Michael Nelson, class of 2002, is currently the Superintendent of Schools for the Old Rochester Regional School District and MA Superintendency Union # 55, a leadership role he has held for the past four years. After Michael graduated from Bates College, he earned his first Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Bridgewater State University, his second Master’s degree in Special Education from Walden University, and he is currently enrolled in Northeastern University’s Doctoral Program in Education.

Before being named Superintendent, Mike was a teacher, Assistant Principal and Principal at the Home for Little Wanderers; the Out of District Coordinator and District Special Education Administrator for the Walpole Public Schools; and the Director of Special Education and Assistant Superintendent of Teaching, Learning, and Student Services for the Old Rochester Regional School District.

In keeping with his career path and choices, Mike was very reflective about his educational experiences at Wareham: “The sense of community is what I remember most about my Wareham Public Schools experience. While going through the school-system I always felt proud to be part of the school community and felt supported by so many. Point blank, I loved high school! I always looked forward to going to school - I always felt engaged in my classes, took advantage of the extra-curricular clubs that were available, and loved being part of the basketball program. Mr. Lipof, Ms. Moore, Ms. Hodgson, Ms. Hammond, and Coach Brogioli are just a handful of individuals that made a huge impact on my upbringing. They knew how to be supportive while insisting on high expectations.” He added that the Wareham community in general is a special place that cares about the success of their students and fosters a sense of pride.

Regarding advice for current Wareham students, Superintendent Nelson offered, “ Every student support, academic resource, and individual you need for guidance is available in the Wareham Public Schools. Your success starts with your effort. Make the most of your opportunity that you have in front of you. I know there are tons of teachers who want to help you with your goals.”

When asked why he wanted to become an educator, Mike responded, ”The main reason why I entered the field of education is because of the teachers I had in the Wareham Public Schools. I am very fortunate to have had many Wareham educators go beyond their primary responsibilities to make sure I had an opportunity to be successful. I'm very grateful for the role that these individuals have played in my life and they have helped shape my core values as an educator today. I have stayed in touch with many of them over the years!
