Dear Wareham Families,

As we enter the holiday season, we also prepare to close out one calendar year and begin another. This is always a time for reflection; calling to mind that which we have accomplished over the past year and that which we seek to achieve in the coming one. This week’s blog is a compilation of many of the highlights from the past year for Wareham Public Schools:

• Providing 1:1 technology for all students in grades 2-12
• Implementing the highly- acclaimed K-2 Focus program at Decas Elementary
• Implementing a unified curriculum in Minot’s preschool program
• Initiating a Humanities Academy at Wareham Middle School
• Welcoming Dr. Peter Steedman as the new WMS Principal
• Minot Forest KKids raising money so they can offer Kiva loans to people in developing countries
• Achieving candidacy status in the International Baccalaureate Diploma and Middle Years Programmes at Wareham High School
• The revitalization of the WMS Drama Club brought us an incredible production of the musical, “Annie”
• The WHS Culinary Program baked and donated cookies and brownies to voters at each of the polling stations on election day
• Our Beyond School Time before and after day care program has doubled its enrollment, offering needed child care for Wareham families at the lowest prices in the area
• Students in the STAGE/Builder’s Club providing backpacks of food to 50 students each weekend
• Our alumni, such as Jordan Rezendes, Darien Fernandez are thriving and breaking athletic records in their collegiate careers
• WMS student, Indiana Troupe, was selected to travel to Indiana as a Fuel Up to Play 60 Ambassador
• Many anti-bullying presentations happened in all schools in the district
• The Summer CARE program created a new partnership with the Water Department this year, to teach students about the water filtration process
• A great WHS Football season….
• Outstanding students, faculty, staff, and administrators

This list is only a partial list of all the wonderful opportunities that have occurred for our students during this past year. Thank you to all who work to provide these outstanding experiences in our schools. We look forward to returning to school on January 3rd.

We continue to be very grateful to the parents and guardians, and citizens of Wareham for their support and encouragement for all members of our school community. My best wishes for a peaceful holiday season. https://vimeo.com/196393479

Sincerely,

Dr. Kimberly Shaver-Hood

Message from the Superintendent | Weekly Events

Dear Wareham Families,

This week I received a pleasant and unusual surprise in the mail. An octogenarian from Stockton, California, sent me an antique postcard of a painting of the Congregational Church and Everett Center. In his letter, he stated the importance of preserving and remembering one’s community’s history.

He then shared his philosophy of the “redistribution of happiness.” He had come across the postcard in his travels and light of his outlook on life, decided to look Wareham Public Schools up on the internet and send it my way.   In his letter, he wrote how our world could use a little more “redistribution of happiness” and hoped that receiving the postcard and his letter brought us joy.

Indeed, it did. This philosophy of paying it forward is one that is also near and dear to my heart.  Whether you call it paying it forward or redistributing happiness, or participating in random acts of kindness, I believe these small benevolences towards strangers spread positivity and send positive energy.

Is there a time during this holiday season, during which you can “redistribute some happiness?” If so, I would love to hear about it. In the next few weeks before vacation, I ask you to post examples of spreading joy to strangers on social media, tagging Wareham Public Schools and using the hashtag #redistributehappiness, in honor of the octogenarian, whose thoughtfulness traveled 3,108 miles.

Sincerely,

Dr. Kimberly Shaver-Hood

Message from the Superintendent | Weekly Events

Dear Wareham Families,

Throughout years of education reform initiatives, one phrase that always gets much press is the plea for school systems to get,” back to the basics.” This statement is often accompanied by stories of, “back in my day…,” when the Three Rs ruled and testing had a much different connotation than it does today. Educating today’s youth, however, is ever more complex than simply adhering to the instruction of Reading, Writing, and Mathematics. Teachers in 2016 are not only providing content area instruction in these and numerous other subjects but also, they are sheltering this content for learners from over a dozen different countries.

They are providing accommodations for students who have a wide range of learning challenges. They are offering social/emotional, academic learning for students who have experienced trauma. They are taking attendance while children eat free breakfast in their classrooms- many of whom would otherwise go without. And they are making sure that their names get on the right lists so that students in need will receive holiday meals and gifts.

Also, the instruction that teachers deliver each day must be designed so as to engage a new generation of learners, who rely heavily on technology. Teachers are helping students to think creatively, to innovate, and to take risks. They are preparing them to become citizens of the world in a 24-hour global economy, in which they will be competing for jobs with people from every corner of the earth. Moreover, many of these jobs have yet even to be created. But we know that when the time comes, our Wareham Public Schools students will be ready, because our faculty has embedded all of the crosses-curricular content knowledge students will need within real world application, to develop skills that will serve them well as they enter college or the work-force.

We are extremely fortunate to have a wealth of talented educators in Wareham who work tirelessly to design innovative instruction for 21st-century learners. Our heartfelt thanks and admiration goes out to these talented professionals.

Sincerely,

Dr. Kimberly Shaver-Hood

Message from the Superintendent | Weekly Events

Dear Wareham Families,

It has often been said that it is not happy people who are thankful, rather, it is thankful people who are happy. And indeed, in being your Superintendent, there is so much to be thankful for in our school district.

I am thankful each day for the grit and determination our students demonstrate as they challenge themselves to achieve in their academic and extracurricular endeavors. I am grateful to our team of compassionate educators, who put their students first, setting high standards and promoting rigor in their classrooms. Thank you to our administrators, who are driven to ensure the success of all students. I give thanks for our paraprofessionals, who work tirelessly to provide individualized instruction and care for students who may face unique challenges. Thank you, to our school nurses, counselors, behaviorists, social workers and psychologists, who care for so many students each day, ensuring their health and wellbeing. Our secretaries are extremely deserving of thanks; working diligently, sometimes greeting each person as they enter a school building, and sometimes behind the scenes, ensuring the smooth operation of programs. Thank you to our bus drivers, who guarantee the safety of our students to and from school each day, to field trips, sporting events, and after school activities. Thank you to our custodial staff for keeping our buildings clean and safe, and working on projects around the schools to make improvements. Thank you to our cafeteria staff who provide our students with nutritious meals.

To our parents, guardians, and caregivers, I owe you a debt of gratitude. Thank you for working with us as partners in your child’s education. Thank you for helping your child with homework at night. Thank you for talking with our educators to help your child make progress socially, emotionally and academically. It is truly a blessing to be part of this supportive community.

I wish you all an enjoyable Thanksgiving holiday.

Sincerely,

Dr. Kimberly Shaver-Hood

Boiler/Roof Update at Decas

Dear Decas Families,

The temporary boiler is onsite, and hook-ups are slowly progressing. It is our hope the plumbing connections will be completed next week on the temporary unit, and the disconnection of the old boilers will occur.

The roof project continues to challenge us with delays as materials and plans have not been forthcoming. A very small amount of prep work will be done on the side of the building, however, work will begin on the roof area soon.

There is a possibility, though not definite the roof replacement may begin during the week of November 21st.
If this is the case, first-grade classrooms would be moved on during the weekend of the 19th (given time for the holiday bazaar to end and clean up). Once the move is made, all will remain in their temporary locations (within the building) until the completion of the project. We anticipate the work will take approximately three weeks if all goes as planned.

We understand there are many details yet to work out and will be providing updates in a timely fashion.

Please know we will support our staff and students in whatever ways we can. As always, I appreciate your flexibility and your willingness to work collaboratively in support of our students.

Sincerely,

Dr. Shaver-Hood

Message from the Superintendent | Weekly Events

Dear Wareham Families,

An International Baccalaureate (IB) education prepares students to be active participants in a global society. The IB Learner Profile states that “The aim of all IB programmes is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world. This philosophy has perhaps, never been more vital.

Last week, the IB accreditation team submitted their final report of Wareham High School’s IB site visit. The report outlined a glowing review of the standards, procedures, and programming, implemented since the initial application process began over a year ago. IB Coordinator, Ashlie Yates-Paquin, praised the efforts of all involved in the journey toward the anticipated designation of IB World School status. Ashlie stated, “The results are a green light for the district for the final verification visit this winter. We are now fully prepared and feel very strongly that we will be an IB World School by the end of this school year and in full implementation beginning in August 2017.”

This program is a tremendous asset to Wareham Public Schools students. With an IB education, students will have opportunities and skill sets that will set them apart from others as they pursue higher education and careers. Wareham graduates will be well prepared for the ever-changing global economy which they will be entering. It is indeed, an exciting time for Wareham Public Schools, and I am immensely proud to be part of such an open-minded community who put students first.

Sincerely,

Dr. Kimberly Shaver-Hood
