Dear Wareham Families,

If you have a student at Wareham Middle School, you may have heard your child mention “Viking Time.” Viking Time is a new concept, initiated by WMS Principal, Dr. Peter Steedman. Dr. Steedman wanted to offer an opportunity in which students and teachers at WMS could engage in conversations about current events, school initiatives and topics of interest. It is a way to bring the school community together around a common theme each week and to allow time for meaningful discussions.

Viking Time is held each Wednesday during the engagement block. Students, teachers, and administrators are getting involved planning these unifying discussions. During the week of World Peace Day, teacher Kim Scott created a Viking Time lesson for WMS to prepare for the One Day, One Goal event. Dr. Steedman created a Viking Time lesson to give students background information and history about Beijing, China in advance of this month’s Global Education student exchange program. WMS student, Indiana Troupe, created a lesson about Fuel Up to Play 360. Another Viking Time lesson centered around being media savvy when watching television, reading articles and perusing social media during this election season.

Only two months into the school year and this new practice at WMS has become a highly anticipated weekly event. I look forward to hearing about new topics proposed by members of the WMS school community for future Viking Times lessons.

Do you have an idea for Viking Time? If so, please contact Dr. Steedman at psteedman@wareham.k12.ma.us.

Best wishes for a wonderful weekend.

Sincerely,

Dr. Kimberly Shaver-Hood

Dear Wareham Families,

The National Youth Leadership Council defines service-learning as, “an approach to teaching and learning in which students use academic knowledge and skills to address genuine community needs.”

For decades, Wareham Public Schools has had a history of exemplary service learning projects, and we have long been recognized as leaders in this area. To this day, students at all different grade levels are continuing to use their skills & knowledge to make a major impact in the Wareham community.

One such student group that is immersed in service-learning activities is the Youth Empowerment/Builders Club at the Wareham Middle School, an after school program, sponsored by 21st Century grant funds, along with community partner, the Kiwanis Club of Bourne and Wareham.

Over the past few years, some teachers received grant sponsored training in service-learning strategies, and moreover, in empowering youth to make a difference in the community.

The Youth Empowerment/Builders Club researched potential areas of community need and was most struck by the prevalence of hungry students in their school-particularly on weekends when meals are not readily available to them.

After choosing hunger as their primary area of focus, these students then researched a variety of highly recognized, long-standing, successful programming in ending student hunger, such as the “End 68″ weekend backpack program.

The students then created a protocol for collecting backpacks, nonperishable food items and devised a confidential method of having students receive a weekend food backpack through the nurse’s office. They solicited donations, participated in fundraisers and obtained media coverage for their efforts.

Their persistence and hard work have resulted in a weekly program in which over fifty students receive food laden backpacks every Friday. Each pack contains enough food to feed a family for the weekend.

We are so proud of these caring students and their advisors for the tremendous service they are providing for our school community. And with additional donations, more students in more schools will also be able to utilize this program as well.

If you would like to donate to this worthy effort, please contact me and I will be happy to see that your donation gets into the hands of hungry students.

Best wishes for a wonderful weekend.

Sincerely,

Dr. Kimberly Shaver-Hood

Dear Wareham Families,

As a lifelong educator, I believe that having grit and perseverance is essential to long-term student success. I have often spoken about these key traits, and how possessing them can have a major impact on one’s academic journey.

A leading researcher on the concept of grit is Dr. Angela Duckworth, head of the Character Lab at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Duckworth asserts that while talent and IQ are important, grit and determination are better indicators of success in any field. After studying the impact of grit and perseverance on years of student performance, she compiled her findings in her first book, that came out several months ago, Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance. The book became an instant bestseller on the New York Times list.

I leave you with this quote by Dr. Duckworth, one that I hope that you will share with your children this weekend. “Grit is passion and perseverance for very long-term goals.  Grit has stamina. Grit is sticking with your future, day-in and day-out/ and working hard to make that future a reality. Grit is living life like it’s a marathon, not a sprint.”

Have a wonderful weekend.

Sincerely,

Dr. Kimberly B. Shaver-Hood

Dear Wareham Families,

I recently came across this poem by an anonymous author, who wrote about two sculptors, working in tandem, to gently and carefully help one another mold a young mind. The poem serves as a creative reminder of the importance of the relationship and connection between school and home. In Wareham Public Schools, parents and guardians are essential partners, working together with faculty and staff, to create optimal learning opportunities for students. Parents and guardians are children’s first teachers, and indeed, no one knows them better. Therefore, it is essential that teachers and caregivers work in unison, to provide each other with information and support, to best serve our students.

We are extremely fortunate in Wareham, to have such collaborative partnerships with our students’ families. Our Wareham families are invested and engaged in the education of their children, and this is evident with each email, phone call and visits our teachers and administrators receive. We thank you for your input, your suggestions and your willingness to work in unison with us. I look forward to continued partnerships with all Wareham families this school year.

Sincerely,

Dr. Kimberly Shaver-Hood

Dear Wareham Families,

This Wednesday, September 21, we celebrated World Peace Day. Officially recognized in 2001, this day of peace is celebrated internationally, with many countries honoring peace in a variety of ways. In the US, the Peace Bell is rung at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City. The bell is made up of coins donated by children worldwide. A gift from Japan, the bell’s inscription reads, “Long live absolute world peace.”

Wareham Middle School celebrated World Peace Day on Wednesday by participating in the peaceoneday.org’s “One Day, One Goal” campaign. With the notion that soccer, known internationally as football, unites people and transcends such barriers and language and economic divides, this campaign encourages people across the world to play 30 minutes of non-competitive soccer on September 21st. And that is precisely what Wareham Middle School teachers and students did.

Last week, teachers used their “Viking Time” periods to discuss concepts of peace with students and to brainstorm ideas that promote peace in the schools and community. And on Wednesday afternoon, everyone at the Middle School headed outdoors for some peaceful and enjoyable exercise with soccer balls. A highlight of the event was when students in Ms. Kim Scott’s class addressed the crowd to present their ideas about peace.

We have posted some pictures of the event on our social media sites. You can search for them using the hashtag #WorldPeaceinWareham.
OneDayOneGoal

Sincerely,

Dr. Kimberly Shaver-Hood

Message from the Superintendent | Weekly Events 9.12

Dear Wareham Families,

As I was walking to the parking lot one evening this week, I looked over at Spillane Field and was delighted to see the many activities taking place on campus. The Viking football team was running drills, preparing for an exciting new season, the Viking girls’ soccer team was practicing in preparation for their upcoming match. And our Viking marching band was working with their director, Mr. Alex Breault, to get ready for the halftime show.

I am extremely proud of the many after school activities that Wareham Public Schools has to offer our students, not only at the high school but in every grade level and at every school in our district. Wareham students have a wide variety of learning and enrichment offerings beyond the school day, in the areas of community service, the Arts, sports and more.

Our students have the opportunity to participate in service projects through such after school organizations are as K-Kids, Builders Club, and Key Club, in collaboration with the Kiwanis Club of Wareham and Bourne. Service Learning is also an integral part of the Youth Empowerment Club in the middle school and Global Ambassadors and Jr. ROTC at the high school. Band and Chorus are offered to students starting at the elementary school, and Drama is an option for students in the middle and high schools. Our sports teams are also consistently expanding their reach and with grade, eight students, now able to join high school sports, we are opening up new doors for our athletes.

This year, all schools in Wareham have after school 21st Community Learning Centers funding. These CARE grant programs funded offer students in grades K-12 free, project based-STEAM curriculum in classes such as Organic Gardening, Robotics, and Cooking with Math, to name just a few.  The list of clubs that are available at each school continues to grow each year as well, allowing students increasing variety in their choice of classes that extend their learning beyond the school hours.

For more information about what each school has to offer, please visit our district website at www.warehamps.org. Also, we are frequently posting and tweeting about events on social media and I invite you to join us online at Wareham Public Schools on Facebook, @warehamps on Twitter and warehampublicschools on Instagram. I hope to see you at an upcoming fall game, presentation or performance.

Sincerely,

Dr. Kimberly Shaver-Hood

Message from the Superintendent | Weekly Events 9/5/16

Dear Wareham Families,

Our first week of school for the 2016/17 year was a great success. As I visited classrooms this week, my senses were truly engaged as I took in the vibrant atmosphere that was present in each of the schools. I was keenly aware of the positive energy that was felt in the main lobbies and hallways. I noticed students engaged in hands-on activities. I witnessed teachers explain concepts to students using various methods of instruction. I heard the clicking of keys on new Chromebooks, as each student in grades 2-12 now has 1:1 technology. I also heard laughter, as students and teachers shared stories about their summer vacation antics.

We are indeed, off to a wonderful start. Many thanks are due to our custodial staff who worked tirelessly this summer, moving and cleaning classrooms, preparing our schools for the students’ arrival. Our teachers have also worked hard this summer, many taking classes and attending professional development opportunities to create new pathways of learning for students this year.

This school year, we will build upon the successes of the past few years. Our students, our teachers, and our programs have earned many accolades and much recognition. While we are extremely proud of all that has been accomplished, we know that there is still more we can do. As educators, we will never stop reaching for the next level, and encouraging our students to do the same.

Best wishes for a relaxing holiday weekend.

Sincerely,

Dr. Kimberly B. Shaver-Hood

In addition to innovations in our programming, our facilities are also experiencing improvements. At Minot Forest School we will begin the next steps in the MSBA Building Project this fall, and the new roof for E corridor and boiler project at Decas will be completed by November.

Please enjoy the video in the link below, highlighting these coming attractions for Wareham Public Schools for 2016/17.
