Message from the Superintendent | Weekly Events

Dear Wareham Families,
Tonight we will celebrate and honor 113 seniors at the 2017 Wareham High School Commencement exercises on Spillane Field at 6:30 PM. Graduation is always one of the most highly anticipated and attended events in the district each year. We celebrate these graduating seniors for their accomplishments throughout their academic careers in Wareham. We honor their teachers, paraprofessionals, coaches, nurses, counselors and administrators from PreK-12, for helping them get to this point this evening, by teaching and encouraging them all along the way. We salute their parents and guardians, for being their first teachers, and for supporting them in attaining their goals. We offer our heartfelt thanks to the community for believing in them and for the support they offer our school district. Success does indeed, live here.
Although this is my last blog before the summer, I will be periodically updating the website and Facebook page with information throughout the coming months. The schools will be beginning their steady stream of summer activities in a few weeks. Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s principal or me, should you have any questions over this vacation.
Best wishes for a fun-filled and relaxing summer break.
Dr. Kimberly Shaver-Hood

Dear Wareham Families,

“Success lives here”

In Wareham Public Schools there are countless pathways in which students can achieve success. From the new unified OWLS curriculum for our youngest learners to the recent official designation as an International Baccalaureate (IB) School, our programs continue to position us as a leader among area school districts.
Success lives at the John W. Decas and Minot Forest Elementary Schools. Our elementary students have 1:1 Chromebook access in grade 2-4. Some of the highlights of the programming at these schools include: Focus on K-2, Fundations Phonics, STEAM for all and POWER Class, which creates productive, organized, willing, empowered and responsible students. And their team teaching collaborative approach prepares Wareham students for today’s challenges and opportunities.
Success lives at the Wareham Middle School. WMS offers 1:1 technology for all students as well as STEAM and Humanities Academies. Other cutting edge programming includes IB Prep, Accelerated Math Class, Dual Enrollment at WHS and a robust advisory program called, “Viking Times.”
Success lives at Wareham High School. In addition to the IB program and 1:1 technology offered for all students, WHS also offers a substantial Advanced Placement Course Curriculum with an average class size of eleven students. Their nationally recognized DECA business program and Bridgewater State University Dual Enrollment program are just a couple of the many opportunities available to our WHS students.
In the coming months, you may see flyers, posters, and brochures with the motto: Wareham Public Schools: “Success Lives Here.” You will see it with a hashtag on our social media accounts. And we encourage you to share your success stories about Wareham Public Schools, also using this hashtag. There are indeed, many success stories about our Wareham Public Schools students and graduates and we hope to be able to shine a spotlight on them and celebrate the many successes in our thriving public school district.

Dear Wareham Families,
Henry Moore said, “To be an artist is to believe in life.” Every child at Decas Elementary is indeed, an artist. This was never more evident than at last night’s annual Art Show, entitled “The Beauty of Drawing,” organized by veteran WPS art teacher, Mrs. Ellen Osborn.
On display in the hallways were hundreds of unique pieces of art crafted by hand by our Decas students. There were self-portraits and portraits of famous Americans in front of the American flag. One section featured a series of creative and colorful animals. Each piece was exceptional in its own right.
In the main hallway, students and their guests were asked to vote for their favorite artist by placing a star sticker underneath a poster of the artist’s biography. Further down the hall was a section created by our youngest Decas students, called, “Our Town.” This integrated project involved a school-to-home partnership. Students worked with their families to create a model of their homes out of recycled materials. In their K2 Focus classes, they created the buildings and roads, connecting the town together.
Art itself, has a powerful way of making connections. Thursday’s Art Show was a prime example of that. As students and families roamed through the school that had been transformed into a gallery for the evening, connections were being made. Caregivers bonded with their children over their artwork, and many discussions arose about the choice of color, subject or medium.
A highlight of the evening was also the celebration of Mrs. Osborn’s career in the Wareham Public Schools. Her love of students and their artwork was evident in every piece carefully displayed on each wall. Her passion for instilling a love of art in students is truly inspirational. She was presented with a large, colorful and decorative cake from her colleagues and the sentiment on the cake was a fitting tribute to a woman who has given so much to the children of Wareham. “Thank you for bringing color into our world, Mrs. Osborn.” We would like to commend Mrs. Osborn on her final art show in Wareham Public Schools, and on a successful and meaningful career. We are forever grateful.

Dear Wareham Families,
How wonderful to see the sun back this week! With temperatures in the high 80s and low 90s, it is perfect weather for ice cream. Last night I had the pleasure of helping to serve up over two hundred ice cream sundaes for incoming Kindergarten students and their families. The annual Coordinated Family & Community Engagement (CFCE) Ice Cream Social is a great opportunity for preschool students and their families to gather together each spring, share a sweet treat, and listen to stories about getting ready for kindergarten.
Reading the books to the children last night, was the special guest, Mother Goose. Decas Principal, Donna Noonan donned her Mother Goose outfit and her basket of books and joined the CFCE Council for this special event.
Also helping dish out the sundaes were Judy Caporiccio and Geoff Swett from the School Committee, Maureen Manning, Director of Global Education & Family/Community Engagement, WPS Assistant Principal, Denise Tobin, who chaired this event, Decas APs Bethany Chandler & Sara Russo, and School Nurse, Sheila Braley. Also volunteering their time to assist at the event were several preschool teachers from Little People’s College and Marianne Murphy, Coordinator of the Parent-Child Home Program.
The CFCE Council offers a wide variety of free programming throughout the year, including Community Cafes at the Multiservice Center, playgroups at the Wareham Free Library, teen parent groups at the Middle School and Family Literacy Nights at the two elementary schools.
Coming up next is the CFCE Pop-Up Kindergarten on May 24 and June 7 from 5:30-7 at Decas School. At these events, parents and caregivers will receive a presentation about Decas Kindergarten expectations and will be able to participate in a Q & A, while students experience a mini kindergarten lesson in an adjacent room. Then parents join their children for a facilitated caregiver and child activity with an Early Childhood Consultant. To register for either or both of these nights, please email CFCE secretary, Jennifer Scully at
It looks like this beautiful weather will continue throughout the weekend. I hope you take the time to enjoy it with your family and friends.
