Message from the Superintendent | Weekly Events

Dear Wareham Families,
With the many mild and sunny days we had during February vacation, it was easy to hope that spring was right around the corner. On a day like today, many of us are forced to exercise our patience as we face another snow day.
Our Wareham Public Schools educators excel at being patient. They show patience to their students each day when they use wait time so that students can process information and formulate a response. They demonstrate patience when they work with students, long after the day has ended, to help them grasp difficult concepts. When spring does finally arrive, spring fever inevitably hits, and our educators must exhibit much patience, as thoughts of summer vacation dance in and out of the minds of our students.
As we all patiently await the milder temperatures, let us enjoy the experiences that each day has to offer. I hope you have a peaceful and productive snow day today and wish you an enjoyable weekend.
Dr. Kimberly Shaver-Hood

Dear Wareham Families,
“All boys and all girls, without any exception, have the right to a quality education.” This is the quote that is painted on the wall in the community room in our sister school, Escola Secundaria Alfredo da Cruz Silvia, on the island of Santiago in Cabo Verde.
This February vacation, a group of Wareham staff, students and families traveled to Cabo Verde to attend school and teach classes in this school, where we have had a partnership for over a dozen years. Having hosted students and teachers from Santiago just a few years ago here in Wareham, the group was thrilled to be able to experience Cape Verdean life and culture last week.
Students were all assigned a school buddy for the week, and almost instantly, bonds were formed. Despite vast differences in traditions, language, and economic backgrounds, students all found many commonalities. Our students enjoyed time spent with their school buddies in classes, on the basketball court and during free time. The lessons they learned about life, language and culture on this African island, where many on the trip have or have had ancestors, are priceless. And I have no doubt that the friendships formed and the memories made will last a lifetime.
I am extremely proud of the response our Wareham students, staff and families had when they heard about the economic difficulties that prevent many students at our sister school from graduating. Students have to walk long distances to school, sometimes up to two hours each way on a daily basis. They need a school uniform and a physical education uniform as well as books. The cost of one year of education and transportation for a student at our sister school is the equivalent of $20 USD. Sadly, this cost is often too steep for many families and results in students dropping out of school before graduation.
Upon hearing this, our group took it upon themselves to sponsor 30 students collectively. The generosity shown by this group is tremendous yet not surprising in the least. Moreover, our Global Ambassadors have stated that they will not rest until all students at our sister school have the opportunity to attend. There are approximately 120 more students at risk for dropping out and in desperate need of a sponsor. The Global Ambassadors will be holding fundraisers to raise awareness and funds to help the rest of these students in need. We commend their efforts to honor the motto of our sister school and to represent Wareham Public Schools so well.
If you would like to sponsor a student for a year for $20, please contact me at or Maureen Manning, Director of Global Education, at and your contribution will go directly to a student’s yearly fee. You will receive a photo and a thank you letter from your student as well. And like our Wareham students, you will be helping make the world a better place.
Best wishes for a wonderful weekend.

Message from the Superintendent

Dear Wareham Families,

One word that comes up frequently when discussing students, faculty, and staff in Wareham Public Schools is, “persistence.” Defined by Merriam-Webster, persistence is, “the action or fact of persisting; the quality or state of being persistent; especially:  perseverance; the quality that allows someone to continue doing something or trying to do something even though it is difficult or opposed by other people.  Persistence is indeed a highly admirable quality and is shown by many of our educators and students in Wareham.

The job of educating our nation’s youth, making countless vital decisions based on research and best practice each and every day, makes the profession rewarding but also challenging. Add in the fact that some decisions may be harshly criticized by others without a full range of knowledge of all the facts involved, and the task can seem quite daunting.

Our educators continue to show persistence on a daily basis, as they plan and deliver innovative curriculum, using highly effective instructional practices. Our students demonstrate persistence as they work through the complex material, not giving up, even when it’s difficult. Some of these students are also persevering through learning challenges and home difficulties; nevertheless, they persist.

I am extremely proud of our Wareham students and their educators for the grit, determination, and persistence that they show day after day, month after month, year after year, as they work to achieve their goals. As a community, we should stand behind them, offering them encouragement, support, and praise.

I hope you enjoy your February vacation and I look forward to welcoming back our students, faculty, and staff on Monday morning, February 27, 2017.
