Message from the Superintendent | Weekly Events

Dear Wareham Families,
Henry Moore said, “To be an artist is to believe in life.” Every child at Decas Elementary is indeed, an artist. This was never more evident than at last night’s annual Art Show, entitled “The Beauty of Drawing,” organized by veteran WPS art teacher, Mrs. Ellen Osborn.
On display in the hallways were hundreds of unique pieces of art crafted by hand by our Decas students. There were self-portraits and portraits of famous Americans in front of the American flag. One section featured a series of creative and colorful animals. Each piece was exceptional in its own right.
In the main hallway, students and their guests were asked to vote for their favorite artist by placing a star sticker underneath a poster of the artist’s biography. Further down the hall was a section created by our youngest Decas students, called, “Our Town.” This integrated project involved a school-to-home partnership. Students worked with their families to create a model of their homes out of recycled materials. In their K2 Focus classes, they created the buildings and roads, connecting the town together.
Art itself, has a powerful way of making connections. Thursday’s Art Show was a prime example of that. As students and families roamed through the school that had been transformed into a gallery for the evening, connections were being made. Caregivers bonded with their children over their artwork, and many discussions arose about the choice of color, subject or medium.
A highlight of the evening was also the celebration of Mrs. Osborn’s career in the Wareham Public Schools. Her love of students and their artwork was evident in every piece carefully displayed on each wall. Her passion for instilling a love of art in students is truly inspirational. She was presented with a large, colorful and decorative cake from her colleagues and the sentiment on the cake was a fitting tribute to a woman who has given so much to the children of Wareham. “Thank you for bringing color into our world, Mrs. Osborn.” We would like to commend Mrs. Osborn on her final art show in Wareham Public Schools, and on a successful and meaningful career. We are forever grateful.
