Message from the Superintendent

Dear Wareham Families,

One word that comes up frequently when discussing students, faculty, and staff in Wareham Public Schools is, “persistence.” Defined by Merriam-Webster, persistence is, “the action or fact of persisting; the quality or state of being persistent; especially:  perseverance; the quality that allows someone to continue doing something or trying to do something even though it is difficult or opposed by other people.  Persistence is indeed a highly admirable quality and is shown by many of our educators and students in Wareham.

The job of educating our nation’s youth, making countless vital decisions based on research and best practice each and every day, makes the profession rewarding but also challenging. Add in the fact that some decisions may be harshly criticized by others without a full range of knowledge of all the facts involved, and the task can seem quite daunting.

Our educators continue to show persistence on a daily basis, as they plan and deliver innovative curriculum, using highly effective instructional practices. Our students demonstrate persistence as they work through the complex material, not giving up, even when it’s difficult. Some of these students are also persevering through learning challenges and home difficulties; nevertheless, they persist.

I am extremely proud of our Wareham students and their educators for the grit, determination, and persistence that they show day after day, month after month, year after year, as they work to achieve their goals. As a community, we should stand behind them, offering them encouragement, support, and praise.

I hope you enjoy your February vacation and I look forward to welcoming back our students, faculty, and staff on Monday morning, February 27, 2017.

Sincerely,

Dr. Kimberly Shaver-Hood

Message from the Superintendent | Weekly Events

Dear Wareham Families,

February is a short month, to begin with, and for school time, it is even shorter, with February vacation and now these two snow days. There are many different ways to keep the learning going while your child is out of school.

Take a visit to the Wareham Free Library. Our library has much to offer families. In addition to quiet studying spaces, they have a number of activities planned each month. Here are some of the events for February:

Feb 11 10:00 AM Playgroup
Feb 14 10:30 AM Winter Storytime
Feb 16 10:30 AM Winter Storytime
Feb 16 6:00 PM Winter Storytime
Feb 21 10:30 AM Winter Storytime

There are also ways to keep the momentum of learning going from home via online websites. Some of our favorites are individualized and keep track of student’s progress such as:

Prodigygame.com
ReadTheory.org

While others offer tips, resources and fun games for students such as:

Redingrockets.org
Coolmath-games.com

During these days off, I hope you will set aside time to read together as a family. Research shows that maintaining at least twenty minutes each day of reading, will help prevent learning loss during time away from the classroom. Also, reading together as a family helps promote a love of reading and learning, and creates bonds and memories that can last a lifetime.

Best wishes for a great weekend, and stay safe in this unpredictable New England weather.

Sincerely,

Dr. Kimberly Shaver-Hood
